- After ranting about poor USR tech support and Vi voicemail problems,
- a friend who I'd recommended a USR to several months ago called--he'd
- gotten the Vi 14.4K. Said he couldn't get the thing to work at all.
- Good ol' USR quality control--the hole in the case for the DC power
- adapter would not let the adapter seat--it was not large enough to
- admit the plastic molding around the adaptor plug! There wasn't excess
- sprue either...
-
- I wish these guys would stop a minute and ask, "Is this product ready
- to ship?" Or, "Does our QC work?"
-
- Anyhow, my new ROMS cured most of the problems I experienced save for
- low playback volume which is stil inherent in all the units I've
- tried.
-
- But, I never tried multiple mailboxes... I first got a hint that
- something was wrong after my friend above did some X-acto knife work
- to get the adapter to seat and got the modem working. With several
- mailboxes set up and greetings recorded, the thing would occasionally
- go nuts, stuttering the "press star to review your message..press star
- to review your message..."(ad infinitum until interrupted by the power
- switch), or skipping from mailbox to mailbox without additional DTMF
- input. No problem, I figured. My 28.8 had the latest ROM, and I was
- also armed with the latest beta Quicklink Message Center. Surely the
- same bugs did not lurk on my machine. Surprise! They do, both with the
- new ROMs and beta QLMC. Both machines (mine a DX2/80 clone and the
- other an HP Vectra DX4/75), a 14.4K and a 28.8K with new ROMS, and
- both versions of QLMC to try--the thing is as nutty as a fruitcake.
-
- Back to USR and Smiths for the tech support support support...
-
- Geez, not again...! Expect victory in another couple of months...
